These services solve different problems. Choosing the wrong layer can leave a customer paying for complexity they do not need or missing the control required for growth.

Hosted PBX

A hosted PBX gives users a managed phone system in the provider’s environment. The business receives extensions, apps, call routing, voicemail, and administration without maintaining the core switch. It is appropriate for companies that want predictable operation and limited technical responsibility.

The trade-off is that deep customization, carrier control, database access, and platform-level routing may be restricted by the provider.

SIP trunk

A SIP trunk connects an existing PBX or dialer to a carrier. The customer manages users and call flows on its own system, while the trunk provides inbound origination, outbound termination, or both. Trunks may authenticate by registration or approved IP address and may be limited by channels and CPS.

A trunk is a good fit when the business already has a working PBX and primarily needs connectivity, rates, capacity, or additional destinations.

Dedicated VoIP or VOS server

A dedicated switch is intended for customers who need to manage carriers, routes, customers, balances, rate decks, billing, and reseller access. It may support large call volumes and complex policy, but it also requires system administration, security controls, backups, monitoring, and clear license terms.

The server specification should be based on concurrent calls, CPS, transcoding, database activity, recording, reporting, and growth—not only on CPU and RAM.

How to choose

Choose hosted PBX for managed business calling, a SIP trunk for connecting an existing phone platform, and a dedicated switch for carrier-grade control or resale. A staged design can combine them: a hosted PBX for office users, a trunk for external connectivity, and a separate switch for wholesale routing.
